CHENGDU, China (CNN) — Rainy weather and poor logistics thwarted efforts by relief troops who walked for hours over rock, debris and mud on Tuesday in hopes of reaching the worst-hit area of an earthquake that killed nearly 10,000 in central China, state-run media reported.

Like most people in Mingo County, West Virginia, Leonard Simpson is a lifelong Democrat. But given a choice between Barack Obama and John McCain in November, the 67-year-old retired coalminer would vote Republican. “I heard that Obama is a Muslim and his wife’s an atheist,” said Mr Simpson, drawing on a cigarette outside the fire station in Williamson, a coalmining town of 3,400 people surrounded by lush wooded hillsides.

Let me be clear: though the Kindle has some advantages over traditional books, for the moment, I’d stick with the low-tech option. The problem is that the Kindle tries to compete too directly with paper. It attempts to electronically mimic the experience of reading a book. But the book is very, very good at providing the experience of reading a book. In this way, the Kindle occasionally comes off as if Ford, failing to make the conceptual leap to the car, had instead built a motorized horse. Sure, there would be some advantages: the robo-steed would never grow tired, and could be outfitted with more plush seating. But horses are pretty good at being horses. And books, like horses, have evolved to maximize their advantages.

The Wired nation knows all about tumblelogs, text-lite microblogs that include art, audio, video and not much more. But indie artists are seizing upon them as vehicles for publicizing their works-in-progress. Earnest singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur has joined the tumblelog ranks with Bag is Hot, his ongoing musical and photographic journal. It’s as interesting as a CD, without the material waste.

Joseph Arthur’s Tumblelog Is Hot With Music, Photos | Listening Post from Wired.com

Tumblr is catching on in a special way with creative artists and their fans. Joseph Arthur was discovered by Peter Gabriel and I’m digging his tumblelog.

Episode 3: The Wreck of the Old '97

tuneagepodcast:

A little earlier than usual, here’s episode 3. Our most reblogged this week was Mates of State with 19 reblogs (at the time of writing), so we chose bands that formed in 1997 as the theme, to allow for a little more variation in musical styles than last week’s. One of us was out of town this week, so it might not be as polished as in previous weeks. That said, here’s the tracklist:

We recommend subscribing to the podcast so all this great music can be automatically delivered every week to your podcatcher of choice. We’d also love to hear your feedback/suggestions and whether you experienced any problems, so please direct all comments to tuneage.tumblr@gmail.com.

Umbrellas

samreich:

I’m terrible about umbrellas. Somehow I’m unable to see them as an extension of my body, and I bump into person after person when I’m walking with one.

But the other day, when it was raining, I weaved in and out of people like a race car driver, even gliding through narrow spaces between other umbrella-holders.

I’ve been playing a lot of Grand Theft Auto.

Wow. Apparently, life really does become meaningless when you’re at the top of your game, you’ve got the house, car, wife, kids and whatever the f*ck else you want. None of that means sh*t compared to the free gift of pain–or so says these Silicone Valley desk-jockeys, who’ve set up their own “fight club,” in an attempt to return to the roots of Man.

Spanish health authorities launched a virtual portal through the Second Life website yesterday designed to help young people too embarrassed to speak to a doctor about sexually transmitted disease or a drug problem. Real doctors will log on and offer advice to their anonymous patients. What both will see is an image of a consulting room with a doctor and a typical patient.
